Inaugural exhibition at TOA Presents featuring nine large-scale new paintings by artist Kim Benson.
Kim Benson returns to TOA Presents on Thursday, October 22, with nine large-scale new paintings. It's the inaugural exhibition at the gallery's new and expanded space, and it's a big one—nine large canvases filling the room. The opening reception runs from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at 1808 Quincy Street NE in Northeast Minneapolis.
Benson is a process-based painter, and that's a good way to describe what you'll see. Her work is physical, dense, and material-rich, with the paint sitting on the surface rather than receding into an illusionistic space. She draws on art history—El Greco, the Baroque, the Renaissance—and works with elemental forms like circles, triangles, and squares. Those shapes first appeared in a 2022 show at TOA Presents, and here they serve as portals and as a way to push her technical ability with masking. Her practice moves between abstraction and figuration, often incorporating hands, books, and collage, and she's produced diptychs along the way.

She's exhibited widely across the city, including at the Minnesota Museum of American Art, The Auction at MCAD, and the Walker Art Center, and she's been showing with TOA Presents since 2016. This show marks the first exhibition in the gallery's new, larger space, so it's a double opening of sorts—a new body of work in a new room. The reception is Thursday, October 22, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at 1808 Quincy Street NE in Northeast Minneapolis.
