An immersive visual art show and community ritual with work by local Twin Cities artists, exploring grief, hope, and resistance.
Pangea World Theater is opening its new home with Grounding — Altars for Sanctuary, an immersive gallery and community ritual that runs from October 16 through November 1. The exhibition takes over the theater's new building at 3020 Minnehaha Ave in the Longfellow neighborhood, filling the space with participatory and somatic installations by Twin Cities artists. The show frames the rallying cry "We Keep Each Other Safe" against a backdrop of ICE kidnappings, police violence, and the ongoing struggle for collective wellbeing and the right to shelter, clean air, water, soil, and meaningful daily life. It's designed as a place to slow down and let grief and hope move through you, drawing on ancestors, experiences of solidarity, dreams, and the roots of resistance.
Fourteen local artists contribute to the gallery: Cándida González, Juan Diego Pérez La Cruz, River Hollows, Mounisha Gorle, Baki Baki Baki Porter, Khadija Charif, Jearica Fountain, Miré Regulus, Sandra Agustin, Mankwe Ndosi, Angelica Bello Ayapantecatl, Chrissie Orr, Meena Natarajan, and José Felipe Ozuna. The opening reception is Friday, October 16, from 6 PM to 8 PM, and brings the artists together to speak about their work. Beyond the gallery, the project includes a Community Ritual on October 31 and November 1 from 2:30 PM to 4 PM, combining song, poetry, and movement. There are also two workshops: "Offerings for a Fragmented World" on Tuesday, October 27, from 6 PM to 8 PM, and "Embodied Writing" on Saturday, November 7, from 3 PM to 5 PM.

The timing is a big part of the story here. After 30 years, Pangea World Theater is moving into this permanent home in the old Hub Bike Building, which houses a 100-seat theater along with offices and public space. While the company is settling in here, its current home at 711 W. Lake Street remains open. The gallery is free to visit, with a suggested donation of $5 to $25. The Community Ritual is on a sliding scale from $5 to $50, with 25 spaces available for each session. Gallery hours are Friday, October 16, 6 PM to 8 PM; Saturdays and Sundays, October 17, 18, 24, and 25, 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM; and Wednesdays, October 21 and 28, and November 4, 6 PM to 8 PM.
