Exhibition of sculptures by Ian Kim that imagines the first versions of fruit, from tree and seed to the essence that remains after consumption.
Ian Kim opens Fruits of Eden I at WICK on Friday, October 23, with a reception from 7 PM to 10 PM. The show runs through November 20, and Kim has been working on this body of work since the winter of 2025.
It's a sculptural exhibition, and that's a key detail to keep in mind before you go. Kim notes that documenting his work has always been difficult: its physicality and tactile nature resist photography, which leaves the pieces best experienced in the room rather than on a screen. If you've only seen images of his work online, this is the version that actually counts.
The ideas here center on fruit, the season of harvest, and what remains after consumption. Kim imagines the very first versions of these things that preceded the fructus—the enjoyment—we readily consume today. He frames the series through tree, fruit, seed, form, taste, and essence: a fruit that holds value in its mature form but yields tenfold when consumed and its seed is revealed. It's a way of looking at the cycle of a thing from the branch to the seed.
