Exhibition of reduction relief prints by Eric A. Johnson at the Vine Arts Center, a fundraiser for Soup 4 you.
Eric A. Johnson is showing Cut Away: Reduction Relief Prints at Vine Arts Center on Saturday, October 17. It's a single-day event in Minneapolis, and the work on display is exactly what the title says: reduction relief prints.
If you're not familiar with the process, reduction printing is a particular way of working with a single block. Instead of carving a separate block for every color, the artist carves a bit, prints a layer, carves more away from that same block, and prints another color on top. You keep going until the block is almost gone, and the final image is built up layer by layer. It's a destructive process—once you carve away a section of the block, you can't go back—so the order of the colors has to be planned from the start. The result is a set of prints that share the same physical origin, each one a different stage of the same block's life.
There's a second side to the day, too. The show is a fundraiser for Soup 4 You, a Minneapolis-based organization that provides meals to people in the community. So, while you're there looking at the prints, you're also supporting a local cause. It's one of those afternoons where you can get a bit of art and do something good for the city at the same time.
