Chamber music concert by small ensembles of Minnesota Orchestra musicians, with works by Beethoven, Britten and others, conducted by Thomas SÞndergÄrd.
Minnesota Orchestra musicians are taking over the Orchestra Hall on Sunday, January 24, 2027, for Chamber Music in the Hall, a series where the orchestra's own players step out of the full ensemble and perform in smaller groups on the Lindahl Auditorium stage. The afternoon is conducted by Thomas SÞndergÄrd.
The program moves across a few different eras. It opens with Sonata for Two Cellos by Barrier, followed by Britten's String Quartet No. 3. From there it shifts to Heal by Fisher, and closes with Beethoven's String Quartet No. 7, known as the Rasumovsky. It's the kind of afternoon that lets you hear the orchestra's players in a much more intimate setting than the usual symphony hall experience.
And these aren't just any members of the orchestra. Sarah Grimes, who made her concerto debut with them in July 2026, is on violin. Lukas Goodman becomes assistant principal cello at the end of December. HerdĂs GuðmundsdĂłttir joined the second violin section in autumn 2025 after serving as concertmaster for Yale Philharmonia. Sonia Mantell is an acting co-associate principal cello, and associate concertmaster Alan Snow will sit as guest concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in spring 2026. The viola section includes Lydia Grimes, who joined in 2022 after studying at the Juilliard School; Marlea Simpson, whom the Chicago Tribune called a "21-year-old wunderkind" in 2016; and Sarah Switzer, a 2019 Juilliard graduate who performed BartĂłk's Viola Concerto with the Yale Symphony in 2018.
