The Tony and Grammy Award-winning stage show brings the story of the iconic Buena Vista Social Club album to life as a tale of big dreams, second chances and the music of Havana.
Buena Vista Social Club makes its Minneapolis premiere at the Orpheum Theatre from Tuesday, December 29, 2026, through Sunday, January 3, 2027. It's an English-language musical that takes the story behind the iconic Buena Vista Social Club album and turns it into a stage show about big dreams, second chances, and the music of Havana.
The plot centers on the legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo, known as the 'Queen of Feeling,' whose voice was celebrated across Cuba until she vanished from the spotlight. A young record producer brings her a rare chance to reckon with her past, and the story builds around that. It's a musical, so the music of the original album is the engine that drives it.
On the awards side, the production has picked up five Tony Awards, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, Best Sound Design, Best Choreography, and Best Orchestrations. The original Broadway cast recording also won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. The book is by Tony nominee Marco Ramirez, direction by Tony nominee Saheem Ali, and choreography by Tony winners Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck. It premiered at New York's Atlantic Theater Company in December 2023.
