Anniversary concert with Howard Shore's original scores performed live to the film, celebrating the 25th anniversary.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert comes to Co-op Live on Saturday 12 December, with the main session starting at 17:30. There's also an 11:30 session on the same day, so you've got a choice of morning or evening. The whole thing marks the 25th anniversary of the Academy Award-winning film, and the format is exactly what it sounds like: the movie plays on screen while Howard Shore's original score is performed live by an orchestra in the room.
Shore's score won both an Academy Award and a Grammy, and it's the music that carries the narrative weight here, rather than just sitting in the background. The film is shown with its full original dialogue subtitled, so you'll hear the voices as they were, but the sound you're actually listening to is the live orchestra playing along to the picture. It's a different experience from watching it at home with the recorded soundtrack; the music is happening right there in front of you.

The film is rated PG and runs for about 199 minutes, which includes a 20-minute intermission to stretch your legs. That's over three hours in total, so it's a proper afternoon or evening out rather than a quick trip to the cinema. Between the two sessions on the 12th, you can take the 11:30 showing if you'd rather be home by tea, or the 17:30 one if you're looking for a Saturday night plan. Both are at Co-op Live in Manchester.
