Launch night for the Suddenly Real Posters open studio, featuring hands-on poster making, music and drinks.
Suddenly Real Posters launches at Altogether Otherwise on Wednesday 14 October, from 6pm to 9pm. It's a free open studio for anyone who needs a poster and wants to make one themselves, using low-tech, high-impact techniques to turn an idea into something real without a big budget or a professional design studio. The launch night adds music and drinks to the making, so it's as much a social as it is a workshop.
Behind it is the 'offscreen method' — the idea that you don't need a screen or a degree in graphic design to get a poster out into the world. The studio is run by the creative hub Altogether Otherwise in partnership with Dr. Martens, who describe their philosophy as: 'there is no alternative to professional graphic design for professional graphic design jobs, but for everything else there is Suddenly Real Posters.' It's a space for the kind of posters that usually live on telephone poles and in shop windows rather than in a portfolio.
And the launch is just the start. Beyond that night, the studio stays open as an ongoing space for Manchester's community of makers, organisers, musicians and anyone else with something to say, with hands-on poster-making sessions running every Monday and Wednesday evening. If you're not coming for the launch, you can still drop in later in the week.
