A dance project for young people aged 8-14 offering workshops in choreography, movement and improvisation, culminating in a sharing session.
The Lowry is running Project 1, a dance project for young people aged 8-14, starting this Thursday 15 October. It's part of the Lowry Youth Dance Project, the outreach arm of the Lowry Centre for Advanced Training (CATs), which is the venue's industry-professional-led, prevocational dance training scheme. The whole point of the outreach programme is to open up that kind of professional tuition to young people who might not otherwise get a foot in the door.
Project 1 is built around bespoke workshops in choreography, movement technique and improvisation. It's not just about learning a routine; the sessions dive into how dance is actually made, from the way a piece is structured to the technique behind the movement and the freedom of improvising on the spot. All genders and abilities are welcome, so it's open to anyone in that age group regardless of where they're starting from.
The project runs on Thursday afternoons from 4.45 to 5.45 pm, split into two blocks: 1-22 October and 5-26 November, with no session on 29 October. It all leads up to a sharing session on Thursday 26 November, where the work from the workshops is performed. The sessions take place at The Lowry, Pier 8, Salford Quays, Greater Manchester M50 3AZ.
