A literary afternoon tea session themed around Shirley Jackson's gothic novella 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle', with food and prosecco available.
The Portico Library is hosting a literary afternoon tea on Saturday 7 November, centred on Shirley Jackson's novella We Have Always Lived in the Castle. It runs from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with doors opening at 2:50 pm, at the library's home on 57 Mosley Street.
The afternoon is part of the library's 'Witches & Healers' collection, which runs alongside their 'Witches and Healers' exhibition. The choice of book fits the theme: Jackson was once described as 'perhaps the only contemporary writer who is a practising amateur witch'. The menu takes its lead from the role food plays in the gothic novella, with Merricat's line 'We eat the year away. We eat the spring and the summer and the fall' as a starting point.
It's one of a series of literary-inspired afternoon teas run by the Portico Kitchen team, Manchester's oldest lunch spot, which has expanded into dinner service for a limited run. Each instalment takes a great work of literature from Manchester and the wider world as its theme, so this is one of several coming up rather than a one-off.
