Poet Karen Solie performs her award-winning poems and discusses her craft at the annual Rylands Poetry Reading, hosted by Frances Leviston.
Karen Solie is reading at The John Rylands Library on Thursday 22 October, from 7pm to 8.15pm. It's the Rylands Poetry Reading, an annual fixture of the Manchester Literature Festival, which returns each year to bring the city's book lovers together to share their passion for language and to be entertained, learn and reflect on their connections with place, politics and people.
Solie arrives with Wellwater, her latest collection, which won both the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Forward Prize for Best Collection in 2025. She'll be reading from it and talking about her craft, so the evening is as much a conversation as it is a performance. It's a good chance to hear the work aloud and get a sense of how it comes together.
She's a well-established poet with six collections to her name. Pigeon won the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Pat Lowther Award and the Trillium Award for Poetry, and she's a recent Windham Campbell Award recipient. Outside of writing, she teaches at the University of St Andrews and is an Associate Director for the Banff Centre's Writing Studio. Her host for the night is Frances Leviston, a poet, critic and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Manchester.
