Manchester Baroque, led by Artistic Director Dr Pauline Nobes, performs J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass on period instruments.
Manchester Baroque are bringing J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass to Manchester Cathedral on Sunday 4 July 2027, from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The performance is part of their 2026-27 season, and they'll be joined by the Manchester Cathedral Choir, conducted by Christopher Stokes.
It's a big piece of music. The B Minor Mass (BWV 232) was written towards the end of Bach's life, and it's widely thought he never actually heard it performed. It's scored for a large orchestra that includes three trumpets and timpani, and it pulls together several different musical styles of the time into one work. It's often described as one of the most joyous pieces of Baroque music ever written, and it's a celebration and a wonder of a thing to hear in full.
Manchester Baroque are a professional early-music ensemble based right here in the city, led by Artistic Director Dr Pauline Nobes. They specialise in music written roughly between 1600 and 1750, and they play on period instruments — instruments made to the specifications of the time, rather than modern versions. That's how you'll hear the B Minor Mass as it would have sounded when it was written, with the trumpets and timpani as Bach intended them.
