A live brass band reimagines indie classics from Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Pulp and Courteeners.
Dizzie Brascalls are fronting the Indie Brass Club at The Deaf Institute on Thursday 15 October, from 7pm to 10pm. It's a six-piece brass band taking on indie classics, and the setlist draws from Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, Pulp and Courteeners — four bands that have a fair bit in common when it comes to the kind of songs people know by heart.
If you're wondering how that works in practice, it's exactly what it sounds like: those songs played on brass instead of guitars. The Arctic Monkeys' sharp lines, Oasis's big choruses, Pulp's wit and Courteeners' Manchester connection all get the same treatment. It's a brass band doing indie, not a rock band with a horn section added in, so the whole sound shifts. You'll recognise the tunes, but they'll be coming from a different place.
And the band isn't new to this. Dizzie Brascalls have built their reputation on these kinds of reimagined indie classics, and they've worked well beyond the indie world too. They've played traditional marches and classical arrangements, and they've worked as session musicians for artists including Lily Allen. That range — from the formal to the pop — is part of what they bring to the night.
