Manchester Baroque, conducted by Christopher Stokes, performs Handel's Messiah with the Manchester Cathedral Choir in an Advent tradition.
Manchester Baroque and Manchester Cathedral Choir perform Handel's Messiah at Manchester Cathedral on Saturday 28 November, from 19:00 to 22:30. It's a performance that's become an established Manchester Advent tradition, with the choir's purity and clarity of voice presented as the ideal way to hear the work inside the cathedral.
Christopher Stokes conducts, and the ensemble is led by Pauline Nobes, Artistic Director of Manchester Baroque. The group performs on period instruments and specialises in music written roughly between 1600 and 1750, played as it would have been heard then. That's the approach they're bringing to Messiah here: the choir paired with an orchestra using the instruments of the era.
The concert is part of Manchester Baroque's 2026-27 season and sits alongside their wider 'Musick in Manchester 1744/45' series. That series is driven by Dr Nobes's research, which recreates the first public concert series known to have been given in the cityβa project that prefigures Manchester's development into one of Europe's leading industrial centres. This performance of Messiah is one of the concerts in that broader programme.
