A new solo play by Titas Halder, directed by Matthew Xia, exploring the human cost of environmental catastrophe in Bhopal, India, with Linnea Berthelsen.
Darkling runs at HOME from 11 to 14 November, a new solo play by Titas Halder. It's a co-production between Actors Touring Company and Bush Theatre, directed by Olivier Award winner Matthew Xia, and it's having its world premiere here in Manchester.
The story is set in Bhopal, India, in 1984. It follows a girl growing up with her father and sister as a giant factory rises over their town, and a single night that tears everything apart. From there, the play weaves memory and trauma into an indictment of corporate malpractice and the fight for justice in the global South. Halder describes it as a play about the human cost of environmental catastrophe, and it's supported by Arts Council England and several foundations.
On stage, the whole thing is carried by one person. Linnea Berthelsen plays 'She', and it's her UK stage debut. She's a British-trained Danish actress, best known as Kali Prasad/008 in the second and final season of Netflix's Stranger Things. This is her first time taking a lead role on a British stage, and she's the only performer on the bill.
