Robert Lloyd Parry reads and discusses the supernatural tales of Frederick Cowles, tracing the writer's Manchester connections.
Robert Lloyd Parry brings the tales of Frederick Cowles to The Portico Library on Tuesday 3 November, from 6:30 to 8 pm. It's part of the library's Witches & Healers collection, and the format is straightforward: Parry reads Cowles' stories aloud and talks through them, tracing the writer's Manchester connections as he goes.
Frederick Cowles (1900-1948) is a name that doesn't come up as often as it should. He was a travel writer and a Manchester librarian who wrote shocking supernatural tales, and he's remembered as a notable but neglected writer of horror with strong local ties. That's the part Parry spends time on — the Manchester side of Cowles' life and work.
Parry is a performance storyteller from Nunkie Theatre who specialises in supernatural literature and science fiction, best known for his shows based on the ghost stories of M R James. He's a natural fit for this, then: a storyteller who knows his way around a ghost story taking on a writer who spent his life among books and wrote about the strange. The two come together under the Georgian dome of The Portico Library, where the exhibition space and the café, The Portico Kitchen, share the same room, so you can eat, drink and chat while you explore. The library's free public exhibitions draw on its 220-year history and its unique collection.
