Public lecture and interactive listening session exploring how music affects the brain, emotions and mood, with a panel discussion and curated music experience.
The British Academy is hosting Why music moves us on Thursday 12 November, a session that looks at how music affects the brain, emotions and mood. It's a free event, and the whole thing runs from 6:30pm to 9:00pm, with doors opening at 6:00pm. The Academy is the UK's national academy for the humanities and social sciences, based in a 19th-century townhouse overlooking St James's Park, and it regularly hosts public lectures, panel discussions, book launches and exhibitions.
The evening is split into two distinct halves. The first is a panel discussion, which will be recorded and live-streamed on YouTube, so you can catch it from home if you can't make it in. The second is an interactive listening experience developed by the researchers, with music curated specifically for the event and accessible in person only. Between the two, the session draws on neuroscience, psychology and creative practice to explore how music affects our brains, emotions and mood, and considers the role music can play in supporting physical and mental health.

If you're planning to go, there are a couple of practical things to keep in mind. The event is free on a first-come, first-served basis, and a ticket doesn't guarantee entry to the main event space, so it's worth arriving early. Live subtitles are provided by 121 Captions. The British Academy is at 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH, and the session runs from 6:30pm to 9:00pm on Thursday 12 November, with doors open from 6:00pm.
