Lecture by historian Tim Bouverie about his book 'Allies at War', with a welcome drinks reception and drinks afterwards, as a fundraiser for the Army Benevolent Fund.
Tim Bouverie will be speaking at Wellington Barracks on Wednesday 18 November, an evening in support of the Army Benevolent Fund. Bouverie is an award-winning historian and author, a history graduate of Christ Church, Oxford, and the writer of the Sunday Times bestseller Appeasing Hitler. He's widely regarded as one of Britain's most respected young historians, and The Independent's William Waldegrave has called him "a new companion" in British political and military history.
The talk centres on his book Allies at War: The Rivals Who Defeated Hitler, which won the 2026 Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize. It draws on extensive archival research and first-hand accounts to offer a fresh perspective on the alliance between Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin, and how it shaped the Allied victory over Hitler and laid the foundations for the Cold War. If you've spent any time with the history of the Second World War, these three names are the starting point, but Bouverie looks at the friction and the rivalry that sat alongside the cooperation.
The evening is a fundraiser for the Army Benevolent Fund, whose London regional office is based at Wellington Barracks, so the money goes to a good cause. It's not just the talk itself: there's a welcome drinks reception to start the night and drinks afterwards, so it's as much a social as it is a lecture. Business dress is expected, which fits the setting of the barracks.
