Monthly St Olave lecture by historian and author Lucy Moore on the life of Lady Ann Fanshawe, following Choral Evensong.
Lucy Moore takes the podium at St Olave Hart Street on Tuesday 26 January 2027, for a lecture on the life of Lady Ann Fanshawe. It's part of the St Olave Lectures, a series that runs monthly from March to June and September to November, with each session held on a Tuesday evening following Choral Evensong or Compline in the medieval church. This particular instalment focuses on Fanshawe, who was born in the parish.
Fanshawe left behind a celebrated memoir that chronicles the civil war, exile and diplomacy of her time, and she also gets a mention in culinary history for leaving England's earliest recorded recipe for ice cream. Moore, a historian and author, will be tracing her life and the world she wrote about, so the talk works as both a biography and a window into the seventeenth century. If you've got an interest in the English Civil War or the kind of domestic detail that survives in old memoirs, this is exactly the sort of thing that hits the mark.
