Lecture by Marlo Avidon on how dress reflected identity, status and social ambition in seventeenth-century England, in the church's lecture programme.
Marlo Avidon is taking the stage at St Olave Hart Street on Tuesday 23 February, for a talk titled Fashion & Femininity in the Age of Samuel Pepys. It's part of the church's lecture programme, and the whole thing runs from 5.30 to 7.30pm, following Choral Evensong.
Avidon is a writer and filmmaker, and the talk comes from her research into how dress worked in seventeenth-century England. It's not just about the clothes themselves, but what they signalled: identity, status, and social ambition. The focus is on the world of Samuel and Elizabeth Pepys, so you'll get a look at the period through the lens of one of the era's most famous couples.
The evening is hosted by St Olave, whose vicar, Jack Jewers, is described as an avid observer and collector of fashion. That's a nice bit of context to have in the background — the lecture is being put on by a church whose own vicar shares an interest in the subject. It sits within their wider lecture series, and because it follows Choral Evensong, you could make a proper evening of it and stay for the music before the talk starts.
