Illustrated talk by David Gibson on Bulleid's 1940s designs and the history of Southern Locomotives Ltd (SLL).
David Gibson is at The Model Railway Club on Thursday 12 November, with an illustrated talk called Preserving Southern's Steam Heritage. It's a deep dive into Southern Locomotives Ltd (SLL), one of Britain's most productive restoration groups, and the steam heritage of the Southern region.
Gibson starts with Oliver Bulleid's designs of the 1940s and works forward through SLL's evolution since 1982, closing with the group's 2024 decision to run charter trains on the Mainline. It's a good way to see how a restoration group actually functions over the long haul. SLL has around 850 shareholders and a fleet that includes seven Bulleid pacifics, a BR 4MT tank, and two industrial locomotives; since 1982, they've completed a locomotive restoration on average every five years.
The talk is hosted by The Model Railway Club, the world's oldest model railway club, founded in 1910. They still build and operate layouts in a variety of scales and run 'Young MRC', a monthly Saturday morning club for modellers aged 8 to 14. There's a bar serving snacks and drinks before, during the intermission, and after the talk, so you can hang around and chat if you're in the mood.
