Concert by the London Symphony Orchestra, resident orchestra of the Barbican, with chief conductor Sir Antonio Pappano.
The London Symphony Orchestra are back at the Barbican Centre on Thursday 12 November, one of many dates in a season that runs from 11 October 2026 to 17 June 2027. The Barbican is their home, and they've been the resident orchestra here since the LSO was founded in 1904 as the UK's first self-governing orchestra. The season is led by Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and Conductor Emeritus Sir Simon Rattle, with a rotating roster of other conductors including Thomas Adès and Susanna Mälkki. Soloists and directors on the bill include Janine Jansen, Yuja Wang, Alisa Weilerstein, Maxim Vengerov and Barbara Hannigan, and the London Symphony Chorus also takes part.
There are a few big milestones the programme is built around. Steve Reich's 90th birthday is one, with Susanna Mälkki conducting five of his works. John Adams' 80th is another, with Sir Simon Rattle leading Harmonielehre. Pappano is continuing his Vaughan Williams cycle with the Third and Eighth symphonies. Mahler's Resurrection Second Symphony is paired with Amber Alchemy by Dai Fujikura, commissioned for the centenary of the Japanese financial services group Nomura and inspired by the bees in the hives on the roof of the company's London offices. The London Symphony Chorus, formed in 1966 with more than two hundred amateur singers, sings alongside the orchestra.
If you're looking for something shorter, the Half Six Fix concerts run 60 minutes and start with an introduction from the conductor. Classic FM is the season's partner and has selected eleven concerts. The LSO also plays at LSO St Luke's on Old Street.
