Two-day guided hiking trip from London to the Peak District, with walks on Mam Tor, The Roaches and Dovedale and a visit to Bakewell.
Hiking the Peak District National Park & Bakewell Puddings is a weekend trip from London running Saturday 21 November to Sunday 22 November, with the coach departing from Novotel London West in Hammersmith. It's a full weekend in Britain's oldest national park, and the itinerary takes in two very different sides of it: the gritstone ridges and moorland of the northern Dark Peak, and the limestone valleys and gorges of the southern White Peak.
Saturday is the big climb. You'll head up Mam Tor, the 'Shivering Mountain' that stands 517 metres high, then follow the Great Ridge past Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill. From up there, you get views over Edale, the Hope Valley and the edge of Kinder Scout, and you'll pass the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle, which date back to 1086. The day finishes in the spa town of Buxton, where you can sample the original Buxton mineral water straight from its warm thermal spring.
Sunday shifts to the gritstone edges of The Roaches and Lud's Church, a moss-covered chasm believed to have been a secret place of worship in the 15th century and a setting for ancient medieval poetry. After that, you'll walk through Dovedale, a limestone gorge carved by the River Dove. Lunch is in Bakewell, home to the Bakewell tart and Bakewell pudding, both still made by hand to original 19th-century recipes.
