Ceilidh night with Fiddle Paradiddle, a caller, a pop-up bar and a haggis supper at St Thomas' Church in Balham.
Fiddle Paradiddle are back at St Thomas' Church in Balham on Friday 22nd January, from 19:00 to 22:30. It's a Burns Night ceilidh and supper, part of the Pop-Up Ceilidh nights they've been running in South London since 2012.
The night follows a set formula: a house band playing what they describe as an energetic nu-folk sound, and an expert caller who walks newcomers through the steps so you can pick them up quickly. They play the classic ceilidh dances alongside a few more adventurous ones, so you'll get the familiar stuff and a bit beyond. There's a well-stocked pop-up bar on site, and the supper is provided by Wimbledon's Julia's Kitchen.
The evening is built around Burns Night, the celebration of Robert Burns. The band rounds things off with a ceremonial haggis piped in and addressed, a dram of whisky to toast it, and a two-course meal of haggis, neeps and tatties with a Scottish dessert. It's the same sort of Scottish tradition that sits inside their wider St Andrews Day and Hogmanay celebrations, and they also run Hogmanay Hootenanny New Year's Eve parties in Balham.
