Free afternoon of listening sessions with DJs Tony Higgins and Mike Peden exploring Japanese jazz from the late 1960s to the early 1980s, part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
BBE Music is bringing its Japanese Jazz Series to the Barbican Centre on Saturday 21 November, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. It's an afternoon of listening sessions rather than a standard concert, so you'll be hearing records played through the speakers instead of a band on stage. The session is compiled by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, both long-time collectors of Japanese jazz, and it uncovers sought-after material from the late 1960s to the early 1980s by the artists who shaped Japan's post-war modern jazz scene.
BBE Music, or Barely Breaking Even, was founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah. It started life as a London club night and took its name from the disco record Barely Breaking Even by the Universal Robot Band. This session sits within the EFG London Jazz Festival, which the Barbican hosts alongside hundreds of other gigs across the city throughout the festival.
