Class Act comedy show at the historic Lyceum Theatre in London.
Class Act opens at the Lyceum Theatre on Monday 2 November, running through to Monday 21 December. It's a comedy show, and because it's on for seven weeks, you've got plenty of time to fit it in around your other plans this autumn and winter.
If you're not familiar with the venue, the Lyceum has a history that stretches back to 1765. Over the centuries it's played host to a circus, Madame Tussaud's first waxworks exhibition, opera and even a chapel, before the theatre curse of burning down struck in 1874. It reopened staging more opera and Charles Dickens adaptations, and from 1871 to 1902 was the home of the legendary partnership of Henry Irving and Ellen Terry. In 1951 it was converted into the Mecca Ballroom, went dark in 1986 for ten years, and since 1999 has housed the roaring success of The Lion King.
Long before any of that, from 1735, it was the home of theatre manager Henry Rich's Sublime Society of Beef Steaks for 50 years. Its members, never more than 24, gathered every Saturday night to eat beef steaks and drink port wine. It's a strange bit of London lore that sits beneath the stage: a small group of men meeting once a week for steak and port, long before the venue ever saw a circus, a waxworks or a Disney musical.
