An illustrated talk by City of London guide Jill Finch on festive traditions in the Square Mile, followed by a Q&A.
Jill Finch is taking an illustrated look at Christmas in the City at The London Archives on Wednesday 2 December, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. It's an in-person talk that traces the Square Mile's festive traditions back through the centuries, starting with the Roman winter festival of Saturnalia and the Saxon Yule, then moving into Medieval mumming and Tudor feasting.
Along the way, Finch brings up the figures that populated those celebrations: the Boy Bishops, the mummers, the Lord of Misrule, the liverymen and women, and the unruly apprentices. It's a journey through how the City spent its winters long before the modern high street took over, and the talk runs for about 50 to 60 minutes, followed by a Q&A where you can ask questions and get a bit more detail on the things that catch your eye.

Tickets are £10, and the whole thing runs from 5:30pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday 2 December at 40 Northampton Road, EC1R 0HB, in Clerkenwell.
