Free online webinar with Paul Dryburgh from The National Archives on the impact and legacy of the Norman Conquest.
The National Archives are hosting Beyond 1066: the legacy of the Norman Conquest on Friday 23 October, from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. It's a webcast, so you'll be tuning in from home rather than heading into the archives themselves. The session is led by Paul Dryburgh, a Principal Records Specialist in the medieval team at The National Archives, who spends his working days with the very records he'll be drawing on here.
Dryburgh's talk looks at the impact and legacy of the Norman Conquest — William of Normandy's conquest of England and the actions of his successors. It's not just a recount of the battle, but a look at the revolutionary changes that followed. He'll be talking through how the conquest reshaped society, law, language and culture in ways that still stick with us today, and how it ushered in centuries of conflict on the borders of Wales, Scotland and Ireland. To do that, he'll be drawing on key sources from the archives to illuminate what was a turbulent period.
The webinar is part of a three-part series called A century of change under the Normans, so this is one of three sessions looking at the era. If you've got an interest in the medieval period, it's a good way to see how the records actually work to tell the story.
