Screening of the theatrical cut of 'Donnie Darko' in 4K to mark its 25th anniversary, part of Let's Make Films' 'The Playground' programme.
Donnie Darko returns to the big screen at Picturehouse @ FACT on Saturday 31 October, the theatrical cut presented in 4K to mark 25 years since its release. It's the debut feature from Richard Kelly, and it's the version that first built the film's cult following.
Set in October 1988, the story follows a sleepwalking teenager who's visited by a figure in a rabbit suit named Frank. Frank brings some unsettling news: the world is going to end in 28 days. From there, Kelly mixes teenage frustration with time travel, dark humour and an eighties soundtrack that takes in Echo & the Bunnymen and Tears for Fears. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal alongside Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Mary McDonnell, Jena Malone and Katharine Ross.
The screening is part of 'The Playground', a series of workshops, screenings, discussions and creative hangouts run by Let's Make Films. They're a Liverpool creative organisation that's been activating the city's filmmaking community since 2024 in collaboration with Picturehouse. This is one of the screenings they've put together as part of that programme.
