Over-18s screening of the Canadian cult film 'Dead Lover' as a Scratch n Sniff presentation, with a card to scratch and sniff when numbers appear on screen.
Button Masher are bringing Dead Lover to Rough Trade Liverpool on Thursday 29 October, and it's not a standard screening. The film is a Canadian production from 2025, directed by Grace Glowicki, who also co-wrote it with Ben Petrie. It's 79 minutes long, so it's a tight watch that fits comfortably into one evening.
The film itself has built a bit of a cult following in Canada, and the story is a strange one: a lonely gravedigger who stinks of corpses meets her dream man, only for him to drown at sea. Grief-stricken, she turns to madcap scientific experiments to bring him back. It's a dark, eccentric premise that sits somewhere between a ghost story and a science experiment gone wrong.
What makes this particular screening different is the 'Scratch n Sniff' gimmick. Every audience member gets a card, and when a number appears on screen, you scratch and sniff to follow the scent of the scene. It's a throwback to the kind of cinema stunt that was big decades ago, and it turns the screening into something you do rather than just watch.
