If you fancy getting your hands messy without any pressure to be good at painting, Splash Art in Liverpool is worth knowing about. It is an interactive art studio in the Ropewalks area, at 78 Duke St. The studio describes itself as England's first interactive art studio, and it is run by Jasmin Ungar, who started it and originally comes from Stuttgart in Germany. It is housed in a former theatre, but the space is upstairs and there is no lift, so if you have mobility needs, it is worth contacting them before you book.

The sessions last around an hour, and each guest makes two canvases. On the first, you work with splatter brushes, ordinary brushes, stencils and paint bottles, playing with colour, texture and movement. For the second, you fill balloons with paint and shoot darts at them, so they burst onto the canvas. Depending on the session, you might also spin your piece on a giant pottery wheel to get a marble effect, or join in a paint gun fight. You take your finished pieces home in a pizza-style box. Protective clothing and ponchos or shoe covers are provided, but bring clothes you don't mind ruining and closed-toe shoes. Photos and recordings of the session are allowed.
The studio offers several formats. The Neon Splash Art Experience includes games and painting under UV lights, with a paint gun fight that glows in the dark. Marble Painting focuses on decorative items and bright canvases, while Sip & Paint is a seated, more social session. For younger children there is the Splatter Experience, which uses just one canvas. The studio also runs kids' parties, hen and stag dos and senior sessions. Adults pay £43 and children pay £33, although one source mentions prices starting from £30. Children from 4 years old are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult who pays a separate entry. Public classes are for groups of 1 to 6 people, private classes for 7 to 16, and the studio can hold up to 60 people. Gift vouchers and gift cards are available, and each booking includes a 50p donation to Mental Health UK.
Bookings are online and by reservation only. Same-day sessions may be possible, but weekends, school holidays and special occasions fill up quickly. Arrive 10 minutes before your session, as you can't go in more than 10 minutes early, and latecomers who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start are not admitted. You can reschedule for free up to 48 hours before the class. Bookings made less than 48 hours ahead, or late arrivals, carry a £20 rescheduling fee, and no-shows are not refunded. Parking is possible on the street or in a pay-and-display car park directly opposite. The studio is also close to train, bus and taxi links.
