Live show by The Wameki, a three-piece act from Tokyo's underground scene, at Boom on Armley Road.
The Wameki play Boom on Sunday 1 November, with the set starting at 7:00pm. It's a single-act bill, so they're the only name on the night.
They're a trio from Tokyo's underground scene, and the first thing that stands out is how stripped-back they keep their instruments. There's no guitarist in the band. The bassist plays a two-string bass guitar, and the drummer works with a three-piece kit — bass drum, snare and hi-hat. With the vocalist simply jumping around the stage, the whole thing is built on a very lean foundation. It's a deliberate choice, and it means the sound is stripped right down to the essentials: bass, drums and voice.
That's the whole of it — no guitar to fill the middle, no extra percussion to pad out the rhythm. It leaves a lot of space around the vocals, and puts the focus on the interaction between the bass and the drums. If you're used to a full band, it's a different kind of energy to hear a trio operating with so little on stage.
