Jazz quartet led by Leeds pianist Jamil Sheriff plays Herbie Hancock's music, from his Miles Davis work and acoustic recordings to his funk and groove.
The Jamil Sheriff Quartet are playing a tribute to Herbie Hancock at The Domino Club on Tuesday 10 November. It's a night dedicated to one of the most influential figures in jazz, with the quartet working their way through Hancock's long career rather than sticking to one era.
That's the point of the set: they're pulling from across the decades. You'll hear the early, groundbreaking work he did with Miles Davis and those classic acoustic recordings that defined his early years, alongside the deep funk and groove-based music he became known for later. They're also bringing in his film scores and his more adventurous collaborations, so the night moves from the straight-ahead jazz of the sixties into the funkier, electric territory he pioneered. It's a broad look at a career that changed the sound of the piano.
At the front is Jamil Sheriff, a Leeds pianist, composer and bandleader who's been active on the UK jazz scene for over twenty years. He's known for a distinctive musical voice and for fronting a wide range of line-ups, and for this project he's put together a quartet to do the heavy lifting. Joining him on piano are Caroline Boaden on drums, Joel Stedman on woodwinds and percussion, and Sam Quintana on bass.
