Storyteller Graeme Cooke brings an evening of tales about the 'Good Folk' of British and Irish folklore and myth to The Old Woollen.
Graeme Cooke brings Tales of Britain and Ireland: The Fae Folk to The Old Woollen on Wednesday 18 November, an evening devoted to the 'Good Folk' of British and Irish folklore and myth. It's told with humour, wandering asides and an unabashed love of the material, and it's the live version of the storytelling Cooke does on his Tales of Britain and Ireland podcast.
If you're expecting the nursery version of faeries, you're in for a surprise. This show leans into the darker, stranger side of the lore: unnatural lusts, magical madness, child abduction, obligatory liminality and exceptionally thorough housework, with nary a gossamer wing in sight. It's the kind of folklore that remembers the Fae as dangerous and unpredictable rather than cute, and it doesn't shy away from the weirder corners of the tradition.
Cooke is the storyteller behind the Tales of Britain and Ireland podcast, which reviewers have called 'modern storytelling at its best, with cinematic scene-setting and moments of genuine tension' and 'quirky, clever and so entertaining'. He's been praised for making old British folk tales accessible without losing their original meaning, and that's exactly what he's bringing to the stage here.
