A club night disguised as a music quiz with more than 100 tunes, including a special of power ballads, at Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen.
Sounds Familiar are back at Belgrave Music Hall on Friday 20 November, and this time it's a Power Ballad Special. If you've never come across them, they describe themselves as the UK's biggest and most raucous music quiz — a club night disguised as a quiz, with zero boring trivia and more than 100 tunes packed into one night. They pull from chart classics, old skool floor fillers, power ballads, indie anthems, mash-ups, guilty pleasures and current bangers, so the music does the heavy lifting rather than the general knowledge.
They've got a fair bit of ground behind them: they claim to have played Glastonbury more times than David Bowie and have sold out the Roundhouse. The Power Ballad Special puts the big, singalong numbers front and centre, so it's more of a night for singing along with your mates than scratching your head over obscure facts. If you're not one for the traditional pub quiz, this is a better fit — it's built around the songs rather than the trivia.
The venue is Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen at 1-1A Cross Belgrave Street, LS2 8JP. It first opened in 1934 as Leeds Children's Palace, a three-storey recreation hall and nursery school built to provide childcare for the working families of the city. After years of neglect it was restored and reopened with music, art, film and food spread across three floors, plus a roof terrace described as Leeds' most spectacular. There's also canteen-style street food from the in-house pizza makers, Dough Boys, if you want to eat before the quiz kicks off.

Doors open at 6pm and the quiz starts at 7pm, so you've got plenty of time to get a drink and a pizza in before things get going. It's a Friday night, so it's an easy one to build a whole evening around.
