Live gig by the six-piece jazz collective Plantfood, with support from FEE, at Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds.
Plantfood are playing Hyde Park Book Club on Friday 13 November, with support from FEE. It's a basement show, so the whole thing stays downstairs.
Plantfood are a six-piece jazz collective that grew out of the Leeds jazz scene and now split their time between here and London. They describe their sound as a 'blood-pumping jazz force', built on a mix of electronic and acoustic textures. The influences they cite run from The Prodigy to John Coltrane, and that range is exactly what they're known for: taking a room from the mosh pit to serene meditations in the space of one set. It's that shift between the loud and the quiet that defines them.
They've picked up some fair attention along the way. BBC Radio 1's Jess Iszatt called them 'powerful as ever', and Papaoul named them a 'Glastonbury 2023 discovery'. If you've followed them since they first emerged from the local scene, this is a good chance to see where they're at now that they're working across two cities.
