Drama workshop for children aged seven and over inspired by the children's book The Pirates Next Door, with drama games, improvisation and role-play.
Pirate School is coming to Morley Live CIC on Saturday 7 November, a drama workshop for kids aged seven and up. It's built around The Pirates Next Door, the children's book that gives the session its name, and the whole thing is run by an experienced workshop facilitator and drama teacher. No acting experience is needed — just a sense of adventure — and fancy dress is encouraged, so if you've got a pirate hat or a striped shirt gathering dust, this is the time to dig it out.
Over the course of the session, the group works through drama games, improvisation, storytelling and creative role-play. The starting point is the world of the Jolley-Rogers, the pirate family from the book, and from there the kids get to invent their own pirate adventures. It's a hands-on way of stepping into a story rather than just listening to one, and since it's built on improv and role-play, no two sessions end up in quite the same place.
The workshop is part of the Morley Literature Festival, so it's one of several events running as part of the festival's programme. Parents and carers are asked to stay on the premises while the session is on, and they're welcome to settle into the cafe space and wait there until it's over.
