Drop-in, family-friendly hands-on workshop led by botanical artist Samantha Cooper to explore mushroom science, folklore and medicine through microscopes, sensory activities and creative making.
Thackray Museum of Medicine is running a Mushroom Masterpiece Workshop on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October, part of their half-term programme. It's a drop-in, family-friendly session that runs throughout the day, so you can pop in whenever suits you rather than committing to a fixed slot.
The workshop is led by Samantha Cooper, a plant researcher and botanical artist whose work focuses on medicinal plants. She's a PhD researcher at Liverpool John Moores University and a botany volunteer at the Liverpool World Museum Herbarium, and she describes her practice as a way to combat 'plant blindness'βthat tendency to overlook the plants around us. Over the two days, you'll get to explore mushroom science, folklore and medicine through microscopes, sensory activities and creative making, and you'll leave with your own mushroom-inspired artwork to take home.
It's a hands-on format suitable for all ages, so it works as well for a toddler as it does for a teenager or an adult. The session is part of the Thackray's wider half-term programme, which takes up a different medical theme every school holiday and uses creativity and play to look at medicine. This time, the focus is on fungi, and the workshop lets you get stuck in with the science and the art side by side.
