Six-hour New Wave and Post Punk DJ set by Mutant Movement marking the 50th anniversary of the 1977 Mutant Movement sound.
Mutant Movement is back at The Backroom on Saturday 2 January 2027, with a DJ set that marks the 50th anniversary of the original 1977 Mutant Movement sound. It's a return to the 2017 edition, the first year he covered with an anniversary set, and it leans heavily on the alternative side of things: around a 4:1 split in favour of alternative over pop, with punk and new wave icons like Iggy Pop and David Bowie alongside The Damned, Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Clash, Ramones, Jam, Buzzcocks, Talking Heads, Motörhead, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Elvis Costello, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Devo and Donna Summer, and only a few interludes of pop and rock. The session runs for over six hours, and it's for ages 18 and over.
Mutant Movement is a Leeds-based DJ and events production company specialising in New Wave, Post Punk and Retro Alternative, and in booking tribute bands that fit those genres. He's been running the project since 2017, and this set looks back to the sound of 1977, the year punk and new wave really took hold. The alternative slant is the point here: the set is built around the punk and new wave icons of that era, with the pop and rock acting as the occasional breather rather than the main event. You'll hear the raw energy of the Sex Pistols and The Clash, the artier edges of Talking Heads and Devo, and the synth-driven sounds of Kraftwerk and Donna Summer, all within the same night.

It's a long one, too — over six hours of music, so it's more of a proper night in than a quick stop. The Backroom is at 50a Call Lane, LS1 6DT. Doors open at 3pm, and the set runs until 9pm. Tickets are £6 for Super Early Bird, £8 for Early Bird and £10 for General Admission, with prices on the door much higher if it hasn't sold out.
