Leeds DJ Mutant Movement throws his 10th birthday retro alternative daytime disco, drawing on the best of the last decade of his parties.
Mutant Movement is back at The Backroom on Saturday 30 January, with a daytime disco running from 3pm to 10pm. It's a DJ set that marks ten years since he started promoting, and the music stays firmly in the New Wave, Post Punk and Retro Alternative territory he's built his name on.
If you've been around the Leeds scene for a while, you'll know the sound. It's the kind of thing that fits right in with the city's clubbing history: synth-led, a bit jagged, and always looking back at the late seventies and early eighties. The 1981 era is a good shorthand for it, when the synth really took hold and Record Mirror ran a Futurist chart with input from DJs across the UK. One of those was Marten Read, who first played The Human League at The Precinct in 1978 and helped build the Leeds scene at Leeds Warehouse. That's the kind of lineage Mutant Movement draws on.
He's been throwing parties since 2017, and these daytime disco sets have become a Leeds favourite — his 200th event sold out Brudenell Social Club last summer. This one is his 10th anniversary as a promoter, and the set pulls from the best of the last decade alongside some of his own personal favourites. He also runs Punk@50 and the Punk@50 Tour, so the punk side of the equation is always there.
