Beginner workshop led by Florence Hoy to hand-manipulate vintage Ordnance Survey maps into a unique sculptural lampshade.
Florence Makes is running a map lampshade workshop at Swarthmore Education Centre on Saturday 31 October, from 10am to 4pm. It's led by Florence Hoy, a designer and maker who'll show you how to turn vintage Ordnance Survey maps into a sculptural lampshade. The maps are cut up as part of the construction, so every shade comes out completely different. It works as a table lamp or as a small ceiling shade, and you'll leave with your own finished piece.
One of the better bits is that you can pick your own location. If there's a place you live in or love to visit, you can request that specific map by email up to two weeks before the day, so you're not just working with whatever happens to be on the table. It's aimed at beginners, and it's for over-18s only.
Swarthmore Education Centre, at 2-7 Woodhouse Square, is a centre for lifelong learning, community projects and family learning. They work with people who want to learn but might not feel comfortable in more formal educational institutions, and they run a friendly, human-scale approach alongside a confidential counselling service. It's the kind of place that's as much about the people as the things they teach.
