Comedy show of improvised music in which improvisers from around the world write songs on the spot to appease the Galactic Emperor, with proceeds to Choose Love.
Improvised Music Galactic Deathmatch comes to Seven Arts on Friday 23 October, a night that sits somewhere between a music gig and a comedy show. The premise is a bit of a stretch: improvisers from across the world are brought together to appease the Galactic Emperor, and they do it by composing a new Imperial National Anthem through a series of musical challenges. One of those challenges is writing comedy songs on the spot, with the prompts coming from the audience, so you'll have a hand in what actually gets played.
People who've seen it before have described the format as 'Taskmaster meets Eurovision', which gives you a decent idea of the energy. It's not a traditional concert where you just sit and listen; the improvisers are working in front of you, and the whole thing is built around the clock and the crowd. Because it's billed as a comedy show, the focus is as much on the laughs as the music, and since the songs are made up on the night, no two versions of the show ever sound the same.
There's a bit more to it than just the performance, too. The money raised from the night goes to the charity Choose Love, so it's one of those evenings where your ticket does a bit of good beyond just getting you through the door. If you're into improv or just fancy seeing some musicians thrown into the deep end, it's a good shout for a Friday night in Leeds.
