Live dub and roots reggae show by Gentleman's Dub Club, the Headingley band that bridges traditional reggae with modern bass music.
Gentleman's Dub Club play The Wardrobe on Friday 23 October, their first Leeds date in a while. They're a local band, formed in a Headingley basement back in early 2006, and this show comes as they mark two decades since they started. What began as an eight-piece has grown into an internationally touring outfit, and they've spent those twenty years at the forefront of the UK's dub and reggae scene.
Their sound sits between traditional roots reggae and modern bass music, and it's rooted in sound system culture. They cite the Iration Steppas and the long-running SubDub nights in Leeds as influences, so there's a direct line from the city's own dub history to what they do. DJ David Rodigan MBE has championed them, calling them 'one of the most energetic and exciting live bands in the country'.
They've kept a high output in the studio, with eight albums released mostly through Easy Star Records. Their music has been a staple on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, with rotation from Don Letts, Huw Stephens and Mistajam. Over the years they've recorded with vocalists and producers including Bitty McLean, Hollie Cook, Lady Chann, Kiko Bun and The Nextmen, and they've toured supporting UB40. On the live circuit, they've played Glastonbury, Outlook Festival, Boomtown Fair and Boardmasters.
