Free funk jam with a house band and audience instruments, presented with Wavio Records.
Funk Jam is back in Leeds on Wednesday 21 October, this time at the Wavio Room on New Briggate. It's a collaboration with Wavio Records, and the night is a more hip-hop leaning version of the Funk Jam the organisers run every two months at The Vinyl Whistle.
If you've never been, the format is something of a hybrid: they describe it as somewhere between a jam, a gig and an open mic. The organisers bring the backline — drums, a bass amp, a guitar amp, keys — and a house band to kick things off. From there, the audience brings their own instruments and voices. Everyone gets a couple of tunes, and if you arrive already in a band, you can go on as one; otherwise, the organisers piece together little line-ups throughout the night until everyone has had at least one turn. It's as much about the people who turn up as it is about the music.
On the bill for this one, you'll find the Funk Jam house band, Wavio Records, and some of their roster. With the Wavio connection, the whole thing leans more towards hip-hop than the usual funk-focused sessions, so expect a bit more of that in the mix. The house band gets the night moving, and then the room takes over, with the line-ups shifting as the evening goes on.
