Northern Soul club night by Deptford Northern Soul Club, presented by Futuresound, at The Wardrobe in Leeds.
Deptford Northern Soul Club bring their night to The Wardrobe on Friday 30 October, presented by Futuresound. It's a Northern Soul club night in the middle of Leeds, and the name tells you exactly what you're in for: soul records and a dancefloor.
Behind the name are Will Foot and Lewis Henderson, childhood friends whose love of soul music started when they discovered Lewis' dad's record collection. They played their first DJ set at Deptford's Bunker Club nine years ago and have spent the time since taking their club night around the UK. They've played Glastonbury and Green Man Festival, and built up regular residencies at London's EartH and Moth Club and YES in Manchester. They also run a modern reissue label, DNSC Records (DNSC.r), in association with PIAS.
They describe themselves as the new face of Northern Soul, and they talk about bringing the genre back into modern dance music. That's the core of what they do: taking a sound with deep roots and keeping it moving on a contemporary dancefloor. If you're not familiar with the term, Northern Soul is the mid-century American soul music that found a second life in the clubs of Northern England, and that's the tradition they're working with here.
