Live gig by trumpeter, composer and band leader Dan Coulthurst at the standing-room jazz and soul venue The Domino Club.
Dan Coulthurst plays The Domino Club on Sunday 15 November, with doors opening at 7pm and the music starting at 8pm. He's a London-based trumpeter, composer and band leader, and the night is his alone — just Coulthurst on the bill.
His original music is described as lyrical, spiritual and powerful, and he draws on influences like Joel Ross and Pharaoh Sanders. If those names ring a bell, you'll have a good idea of where he's coming from: Ross for the melodic, contemporary jazz side of things, and Sanders for the more expansive, spiritual jazz tradition. It's the kind of set that sits somewhere between the two.
The Domino Club is the one in the basement of a Grade II listed building on Grand Arcade, and it's their own night. They programme funk, soul, blues and jazz from Wednesday to Sunday, with special events on Tuesdays and a jazz jam on the first Sunday of each month. It's a standing room venue with a small number of bookable tables and cocktails at the bar. On regular Friday and Saturday nights there's a £9 door charge, but the rest of the week it's pay as you feel, with all proceeds going to the musicians. This being a Sunday, it's the pay-as-you-feel arrangement.

A couple of practical things to keep in mind: the club is strictly 18+, and because it's in a basement, there's no accessible entrance. Doors at 7pm, music at 8pm, and the night is pay-as-you-feel.
