Free creative drop-in for families to make carnival masks, dance and paint a mini mural in Chapeltown.
Creative Family Drop-in is at the Leeds Caribbean & African Centre CIC on Saturday 24 October, from 10:00 to 14:00. It's a free session, and as a drop-in, you can turn up whenever suits you during those hours rather than committing to the whole morning.
The day is run by Sandra Whyles of Chapeltown Arts, and it's part of a series of creative family events built around a new garden in Chapeltown. The garden sits under Reflections of Carnival, the mural painted by Rhian Kempadoo-Millar and commissioned by East Street Arts. The activities on the day follow that carnival theme: you can make carnival masks and headwear, take part in carnival dance, get stuck into gardening, and paint a mini mural. It's a mix of making, moving, and getting your hands dirty, so it works for kids who'd rather be dancing than sitting still.
Knowing the venue helps set the scene. The Leeds Caribbean & African Centre, also known as the Leeds West Indian Centre, is the heart of Chapeltown. It's described as one of the last remaining pieces of history the area has to offer, its survival relying on the community coming together. At the same time, it's got a reputation as a venue that hosts some of the best and most underground raves the city has to offer. This session sits on the quieter end of that spectrum, but it's the same space.
