Live gig by Cornish psych and shoegaze act COSM on their EP tour, with guests, at Hyde Park Book Club.
COSM are playing Hyde Park Book Club on Saturday 24 October, as part of their EP tour. They're a Cornish psych and shoegaze act, and this is one of the dates they've put together around the release of their new EP. The record was preceded by two singles, 'Black Holes' and 'I Still Don't Know', so there's a fair bit of new material to hear.
The band comes off the back of a busy festival season, with appearances at Boardmasters, Great Estate and Little Orchards. The live show leans on fuzzy psychedelic guitar riffs, shimmering vocal harmonies and soaring, effects-laden solos, drawing on the sounds of '90s shoegaze and dream pop while weaving in modern indie and psychedelic influences. It's the kind of set that lets the textures do a lot of the work, with the guitar and the vocals pulling in opposite directions.
They've been open about where that sound comes from, too. The list of bands they cite as influences is a long one, running through Ride, NewDad, Diiv, Alvvays, Foals, Beach Fossils, The Strokes, Lush, Wolf Alice and The War on Drugs. It's a broad spread, but the common thread is that wall of sound and those melodic, washed-out vocals that define shoegaze and dream pop. If you're into that side of indie, you'll recognise the territory they're working in.
