Live session by Philadelphia shoegaze project Cigarettes for Breakfast, with support from Waves Crashing and Abandoned Buildings, at Hyde Park Book Club.
Cigarettes for Breakfast play Hyde Park Book Club on Friday 6 November, with Seattle's Waves Crashing and Bradford's Abandoned Buildings opening the night. It's a Philadelphia-based project founded by Matt Whiteford, and the sound sits in that wide-open, hazy territory of lush soundscapes and raw, fuzzed-out performances, with My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive cited as the main touchstones.
It started as a bedroom DIY project, with the early 2020-2021 releases coming out on cassette and CD. The debut LP, Join the Circus (2023), was recorded with former members and mix engineer Jeff Zeigler. The second album, Slow Motion (2025), went back to the DIY spirit: Whiteford wrote, recorded, performed and mixed it himself, with drums from co-founding drummer Anthony Rossi. The live line-up has since settled around Whiteford on vocals and guitar, Rossi on drums, and Martin Buechler on bass.
Their latest release is the colour wheel EP, recorded over three years and put out via Abandon Everything Records and The Upstate Sound. That's the newest material they'll be bringing to the stage, alongside the songs from the two albums.

Support comes from two very different places. Waves Crashing are in from Seattle, blending grunge, gaze and dream pop. Abandoned Buildings are a Lynch-inspired quintet from Bradford, so they're the local act of the night. The whole thing runs from 7:30pm to 11:00pm at Hyde Park Book Club, 27-29 Headingley Lane, Leeds, LS6 1BL.
