An immersive, actor-led Halloween experience where costumed characters lead groups into the shadowy cellars of Temple Newsam, featuring theatrical effects and unsettling characters.
Cellar Scares runs at Temple Newsam from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, with daily sessions throughout. It's an immersive, actor-led Halloween experience that takes you beneath the grounds of one of Leeds' most famous historic estates. Costumed storytellers lead groups down into the house's hidden cellars, and from there it's a subterranean journey through torch-lit corridors, set-dressed chambers and dark passages filled with sudden shocks, theatrical effects and unsettling characters hiding in the gloom. The whole thing lasts roughly 20 minutes, and the route navigates steep stone staircases and uneven floors.
The setting does a fair bit of the heavy lifting. Temple Newsam's Halloween hauntings are known for bringing the estate's past residents to the surface, among them the notorious Blue Lady, who is said to roam the corridors at night. Cellar Scares is the scarier sibling, an immersive trip from which you emerge back into the daylight with screams and surprises still ringing.

It's recommended for ages 12 and above, and under-16s need to be accompanied by a paying adult. Pre-booking is essential, so you'll want to get your slot sorted in advance rather than turning up on the day. The sessions run daily from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November, though the house is closed on Monday 26 October, so keep that in mind if you're planning around the bank holiday. It costs £5 per person, in addition to Temple Newsam House general admission.
